Ride June 2021
Leave the modern world behind. Breath in the fresh air and drink in the scenery around you as you think to yourself how you want to capture this moment in your memory so that you can always see it in your mind.

Give thanks for the day!
No rating: not offered to the public. The closest would be the Grasslands park that I will visit in 2022
The Big Muddy in southern Saskatchewan
Sometimes life hands you an opportunity that you can’t pass up, and this ride was one of them. My friend Nancy Gray grew up in southern Saskatchewan and became friends with the Burgess family. Their lives will be forever connected by the memories they share. Nancy remembers riding the Burgess family horses and recalls them each by name. Michael Burgess and his wife Tamela are the current owners of the ranch following in the footsteps of the generation before them. History is a very important part of their lives and they love to share their memories of the past. The Coronach history tour includes a visit to the Burgess family museum that includes the live story telling of the history of the community by Tam that leaves a person craving more.

Cypress Hills Horse Camp
The Cypress Hills, which were never glaciated, have a rich and exciting history. They are known as an erosional plateau, having been formed by millions of years of sedimentary deposition followed by millions of years of erosion. An archaeology project started in the 1970’s at the Stampede Site near the Elkwater townsite, has revealed human inhabitation of the hills for more than 8,500 years.
The Cypress Hills horse camp of Saskatchewan has been in existence for close to 60 years. It started with a small fenced pasture and an outhouse. Over the years they have added a well, tie stalls, and a few pens but for all intents and purposes, the campsite has remained primitive and pretty much pristine. A central campfire has been set up in the open space in the middle of the horseshoe camp and the fire wood is free. Trailers park around the perimeter of the camp (24 sites) with the Battle Creek winding it’s way around the camp allowing the horses to be watered without using the well which is very limited in its reserves.
There are tie stalls, small 10×10 pens and larger pens of various sizes. People can turn their horses loose in the pasture or they can put up electric fence inside the pasture. The pasture is fenced on three sides and the fouth perimeter is the creek. There is no hay allowed in the park and it is required that horses be fed alfalfa cubes which can be brought in or supplied by the park for $15/bag
If the camp is full, newcomers can park in the overflow until a spot becomes available which may take a day or two. No one has been turned away to date. Campsites are $20/night. Some of the sites come with a cook fire and some also might have a picnic table, but best to have your own just in case.
There is a ladies and a gents outhouse but no running water. They are cleaned daily and kept well stocked. They even have solar lights for your night time needs.
Overall, the setting is epic and there is usually room for all and when its full, everyone makes an effort to accommodate. You can ride all day and not see another rider or ride in groups, whichever you prefer.

this campsite is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled sites even after years of use. It does not have the services that other sites might offer but don’t let that fool you, it is a great ride.
The West Block
Make your escape to the Cypress Hills and experience an incredible mix of forests, wetlands and grasslands. Visit the conglomerate cliffs, the cougar caves, and historic Fort Walsh.

Eagle Creek Regional Park

Eagle Creek is close to home for us and a fun place to take the kids. The trails lead around the golf course and campgrounds and are an easy distance for kids to ride. There are horse pens with water supplied and primitive campsites (3) where you can see your horses. There are outhouses for the horse camping but you can walk or drive to the regular campground where they have showers. The horse camping is right beside the creek and is a short walk for the kids to take a dip. They also have a restaurant so you don’t have to cook if you don’t want to, or perhaps you just want an ice cream on a hot day. Mmmmm
For the kids there is an extremely run down mini-golf course and stocked trout pond. They also have the intent to re-develop the spray pool that was closed years ago.
